LIFE IASHAB project with the working title „Forests of the Northeast“ is an initiative of the Northeast State Company – Shumen targeting conservation and restoration of nature, and forests in the territory managed by the enterprise.
The main project objective is to eradicate plantations of invasive alien species that are in unfavourable condition and to restore priority forest habitats in 10 Natura 2000 sites: Provadia-Royaksko plato, Harsovska reka, Suhata reka, Kamchia,Kraimorska Dobrudja, Kamchiyska and Emenska planina, Ostrovche, Preslavska planina, Golyama reka and Rositsa-Loznitsa.
In addition to planned direct conservation activities, the project will contribute to the improvement of strategic planning in the forest sector and will provide opportunities for exchange of experience and good practices with experts from other European countries.
Main project activities include:
- Analysis of the condition of forest habitats and identification of trends for their future development considering the impact of climate change;
- Eradication of plantations of invasive and non-native species in unfavorable condition – on a total area of 105.3 ha in 5 protected sites of the Natura 2000 network in Northeastern Bulgaria;
- Collection of forest reproductive materials and production of seedlings for reforestation;
- Restoration through reforestation of 192.8 ha of 4 priority forest habitats (91H0*, 91G0*, 91I0* and 91E0*) in 10 Natura 2000 sites in Northeastern Bulgaria;
- Organizing field visits and trainings for experts and stakeholders;
- Development of a Monitoring Plan and a Program for eradication of the target invasive species for the territory managed by Northeastern State Company;
- Providing input for updating policies and strategic documents in the forestry sector at the national level.
Project „Forests of the Northeast“ is implemented with the financial support of the LIFE Nature 2019 Programme of the European Commission.
