Field work on the Northeast Forests project has begun
Field work has started under the conservation project of the Northeastern State Enterprise „Forests of the Northeast“ LIFE19 NAT / BG / 001133 – LIFE IASHAB. Black locust trees were removed and remaining vegetation cleared over 10 ha on the territory of the State Forestry Unit – General Toshevo. Black locust is on the list of EU invasive species. In Europe, it was imported from North America and is used mainly for biomass production, as in 15-20 years the trees reach the culmination of their growth and can be cut down. Such plantations are harvested several times (3-4 times) after which their regeneration potential decreases dramatically and the status of their stands deteriorates. Invasive species such as the black locust are spreading rapidly in the wild, occupying all open spaces and displacing native species from their habitats.
After the eradication of the black locust, all cleared areas on the territory of SFU General Toshevo will undergo soil preparation, and in 2022 they will be reforested.
Funds from the Forests of the Northeast project will support the eradication invasive species in poor condition and the restoration of natural habitats on an area of some 200 ha. The large-scale reforestation will be carried out on the territory of SFU Dobrich, SFU General Toshevo, SHU Sherba and SHU Balchik within 4 years.
