Children from Shumen with lessons about the forest and Natura 2000
What is a forest? What do trees grow from? How do we tell how old is a tree? Why are nature parks and Natura 2000 sites established? What are foresters doing to preserve plants and animals in the Northeast?
These and many other questions had to be answered by 160 children from the fourth and third groups of the kindergartens „Izvorche“, „Brezichka“, „Slance“ and „Smehorani“. Irina Pavlova from Shumen Plateau Nature Park, Tatiana Dimitrova from Northeastern State Enterprise and Fethiye Shabanova from Shumen State Forestry Unit conducted several lessons with the kids and each child received a booklet with applications and pictures for follow-up work at the kindergarten or at home. During the lessons the kids showed what they think the forest looks like and learned which animal eats what. The children were also reminded why it is important to protect the trees and animals in the Shumen Plateau Nature Park and learned which are the Natura 2000 sites and why they were established.
On 21 May all the countries of the old continent celebrate the European Natura 2000 Day which coincides with the 29th anniversary of the EU’s LIFE program. Natura 2000 Day is celebrated based on a special Declaration signed in 2017 by the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Presidency of the Council and the Committee of the Regions. The date is set in connection with the EU’s Habitats Directive, approved in 1992, which, together with the Birds Directive (previously approved in 1979), provides the basis for building the network. The LIFE Programme is the financial instrument of the European Union supporting projects for the protection of the environment, nature and climate throughout the Union. The lessons of forest pedagogues are part of the conservation project of NESC „Forests of the Northeast“ LIFE19 NAT / BG / 001133 – LIFE IASHAB.
