Dr. Maria Kaschieva from „Episkop Konstantin Preslavski“ University of Shumen presented the work of the forest educators from Northeastern State Enterprise, Shumen Plateau Nature Park and University of Shumen at the 12th ESENIAS & DIAS international conference held in Varna. The forum is financed by the „Scientific Research“ fund of the Ministry of Education and Science. Among the partners of the event are Forest University – Sofia and Bulgarian Academy of Science. From the 11th to the 13th of October scientists from Serbia, Romania, Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria discussed topics related to invasive species and their spread. Dr. Kaschieva talked about „Forest Pedagogy in the context of invasive species control“. She presented the book „Tales from the Old Forest“ and the Forest Pedagogy lesson based on it. In the last two years more than 1,000 children from the region of Shumen, Varna, Dobrich and Targovishte participated in classes and learned more on the invasive species that took the place of the native trees from the Old Forest. The children’s book „Tales from the Old Forest“ was published within the „Forests of the Northeast“ project, which is implemented with the financial support of the LIFE Nature 2019 Program of the European Commission. Its main objective is to remove plantations of invasive alien species that are in an unfavorable condition and to restore priority forest habitats in 10 protected areas of the Natura 2000 network in Northeastern Bulgaria.
