30 years of the LIFE Programme in Bulgaria will be celebrated by the NESC team during the Forest Week 2022. At the entrance of the company is already placed a huge banner, which presents brief information about what has been done under the programme in our country, as well as information on the two ambitious LIFE projects currently being implemented by NESC team.
Since the second half of the 20th century Bulgarian forests have undergone significant changes. In the period after the 1960s, the area of forests has increased significantly by over 0.6 million ha, and the standing stock in the forests has increased by nearly 500 million m3. Over the last two decades increasing attention has been paid to sustainable forest management and protection. Traditional afforestation is in many cases replaced by environmentally friendly methods for natural regeneration of forests with native species.
Over the last decades European funds and financial instrument have supported the implementation of numerous forestry projects and significantly contributed to sustainable forest management. Until now Bulgarian Forestry structures have implemented over 150 projects funded by the Rural Development Programme, Operational Programme „Environment“, Operational Programme „Administrative Capacity“, PHARE Programme, cross-border and inter-regional programmes, etc.
Successfull forestry projects implemented with the financial support of EC LIFE Programme also had a positive impact on the sector over the last 10 years. These projects are a clear example of successful cooperation between the state forest administration, the structures managing forest territories and nature protection NGOs.
Currently, experts from the Northeastern State Enterprise are implementing two ambitious LIFE projects: „Measures to protect the Lesser Spotted Eagle and its habitats in Bulgaria“ – LIFE18 NAT / BG / 001051 and „Forests of the Northeast” LIFE19 NAT / BG / 001133 – LIFE IASHAB.
